Rock/Creek and Chaco Commit to Raising $5000 to Reopen Climbing Area to Community

Historical photo of Gus Fontenot, Southeastern Climbers Coalition board member, climbing the Monopoly Arete in Steele, AL, over 20 years ago.

Chattanooga, TN (PRWEB) April 10, 2009

Independent outdoor retailer Rock/Creek and specialty footwear manufacturer Chaco have partnered with the Southeastern Climbers Coalition to raise $ 5,000 toward the purchase of a long-closed climbing crag in Steele, AL. A portion of the proceeds from every Chaco Performance Sandal sale at Rock/Creek from now until Earth Day will be donated to this effort. Talented filmmaker Josh Fowler and photographer Andrew Kornylak donated their time to produce a video introduction to the Steele story. The film is currently posted online: www.rockcreek.com/steele/ .

As the movie explains, in 1987, too many climbers wore a path through a landowner’s tomato field near Steele, AL. The landowner closed the access down, and a popular climbing area was lost. But a grassroots coalition vowed to one day regain access to Steele.

“We’ve been working on this project for a little over 8 years now without much success… luckily this past fall, we talked to the right landowner at the right time,” explains Southeastern Climbers Coalition president Brad McLeod. “We have 120 days to raise all the funds, so we’re teaming up with Rock/Creek and Chaco to make that happen.”

Chad Wykle, Chaco Sandals sales rep and long-time defender of climbing access, elaborates: “As soon as we found out about this project, both Chaco and Rock/Creek literally jumped at the chance to work again with the SCC. Chaco as a company, has had a long 20 year history of making incredible footwear for the outdoor consumer. In that 20 years, we have also been committed to the core, to protecting and preserving our natural resources.”

Rock/Creek co-owner and Signal Mountain resident Dawson Wheeler explains why Rock/Creek would take on a project like this: “Rock/Creek has taken a position a number of years ago that we want to leave a legacy behind. What we want to be able to look back to is our neighbors. ‘How did we impact our neighbors and how did we impact our community at large? ‘ and you can look back and go, ‘See this area; Chaco paid for this area to be here.’ This is building ownership and it’s also what we should do.”

About Rock/Creek:

Rock/Creek was named 2009 Online Retailer of the Year by Backpacker Magazine and SNEWS and was listed as a Top 25 Retailer by Outdoor Business for 2008 and 2009. Basic Training — Base to the Success Part I

Basic Training — Base to the Success Part I

Once upon a time, a shepherd boy pastures cow on the mountain every day. There is a big crag seam on the way. On the beginning, because the cow is too small, the boy worries that the cow will fall down the crag seam and die. Therefore, he tackles the cow and walk through the bridge. Every day, he repeats this behavior twice: back and forth. Many days passed, he has formed a custom finally to tackle the cow. With the lapse of time, the calf has become the big cow gradually, but the shepherd boy has not changed his custom, still naturally hugs the cow to walk through the crag seam.

With the cow becoming bigger and bigger, the boy’s strength also increases day by day. Finally, the boy has become a strongman who can hold up several hundred items easily.

What is basic training? and why?

Basic training means training the simple behaviors or beliefs or actions to the best or perfect, and at last making these simple items to be our potential talents. The story above shows the procedure of basic training of the boy. Basic training is just like making a firm base for building houses. Perhaps every day we can only improve ourselves a little, such as %1, but with time elapsing, we can get a big and surprising change.

In our everyday life, many useful and active actions are helpful to improve ourselves. Maybe the simple item is only a sentence, a belief or just a movement. There is a book named “results depend on details” (published by XinHua press in china) and many successful cases introduced in it are models of valuing at details or keeping on exercising simple details. Some of these cases are KFC, wal-mart, McDonald, GE.

What are the contents of the basic training?

Every items of basic training seems simple, yes it does. Exercises on these items need our time and big resolution. The key points we should learn before introducing such items are: 1) making basic training a important and urgency task for ourselves; 2) practicing, practicing and practicing, while not only reading the material and put aside and hope good things will come.

The items are:

1) Write down the things or ideas;

2) Draw out the things or ideas;

3) No impossible, looking for ways out for every problem;

4) No any excuses;

5) Active and optimistic. Let away bad moods;

6) Goal Visualization, making dream board to help you succeed;

7) Eliminate adjective, expressing in quantization;

8) Keep smiling, passionate;

9) Walk faster than before in 30% and speak faster;

10)Listen carefully and nod to your speaker;

11)Praise others more than three times every day;

12)Write cards which are full of thanks;

13)Self-examination at least once every day;

14)Progress a little every day;

15)Exercise a little every day;

16)Believe everything is great;

17)The first important thing is to change ourselves, not others;

18)I am the source of everything;

19)Exercise the simple and effective actions to be perfect

20)Quick learn using mindmap;

21)The most important: carrying on basic training.

How to carry on basic training? &mdash&mdashAn overview.

To successfully carry on basic training, we should value at another simple action. First, let&rsquos ask ourselves some questions: what place you will put self improvement in your life? Every day, we read, study, think and work to get a better ability in specialized field or IQ. Have you spent enough time to improve you EQ? Will you spent about 30 minutes on improving yourself? If your answer is ok, you have taken a big step towards success. Let&rsquos go on and head for success.

For the 21 items listed above, we will introduce in detail the way to carry on them in the next parts. First we take an overview:

a) Spending time. Every day, we should spend about 30 minutes, of course, the more time you spend, the more improvement you will achieve, but remember that 30 minutes are necessary. You can spend 30 minutes at a time or you spend 10 minutes at a time and train yourself 3 times a day or at you will.

b) Reading the positive beliefs loudly. You are yourself. You should tell yourself what you should do or should have, not the downside things. As to the 21 items above, add &ldquoI will&rdquo on each of the item and read it out. 10 times for an item, we call item 1 to item 21 as a turn, please read 5 or more turns.

c) Imaging while reading. For some of the items, we will get better result if we are imaging the future while reading. For example, when we read item 8, we can image that we are smiling to everything, no matter it is happy or miserable. We are finding the good from that thing, with smile and passion. Item 16 is just the same. In our life, we might have come across many bad things, such as be cheated, be fooled, be jilted, sometimes perhaps just a dispute between man and wife. How did you deal with the things before? Have you thought you could have drawn something good from those bad things? Oh, we should first think of the belief: everything is great. Right?

d) Put into practice in life and work. Some of the items are practice based. Such as item 20, we can really learn new knowledge or arrange things using the mindmap tool. Many people or big company have used mindmap tool to make a decision, design a new plan, etc.

Let’s begin from now, just read, do, practice and enjoy everything. In the next part,I will share basic training part 2 writing down for success part2 with you all

Great Places to Go Rock Climbing for Groups

Great Places to Go Rock Climbing for Groups

Rock climbing has a lot to offer. The sense of accomplishment and elation of reaching the top are hard to match. Today many groups from social “packs” to corporate groups are looking into rock climbing for sheer enjoyment as well as team building experiences. Rock climbing can help built team work and friendships.

There are a number of locations in the U.K. that accommodate groups for both indoor and outdoor rock climbing.  You can buy activity days that should normally have fully accredited instructors who can provide novices the chance to learn how to safely navigate there way up through a crag. These days out are good for corporate team building although can cost between £50 and £120 per person. Below are listed a number of locations you may want to consider for your group rock climbing.

Indoor climbing

If you just want to get a small taste of climbing with reduced expense then indoor climbing can be a great way to go about it. Lakeland Climbing has an indoor course that offers private sessions for groups and families. Located in the Lake District in Kendal this facility offers beginners courses and individual sessions to build skills.

Peak District

Rock-climbing in the Peak District began with early pioneers in the 1890s, and has now expanded so that every weekend there is thousands of climbers on the crags. The Peak has a wide range of crags both large and small with well over 10000 recorded climbs – probably no-one knows exactly how many – and being close to several large population centres means that it is a popular place to climb.

The Peak provides a wealth of climbing for all. Valkyrie – Froggatt Edge in the north of the Peak is a good spot and gritstone crags in the Chew Valley can provide strenuous rather than hard gritstone routes.

Wales

Wales has a much more interesting terrain compared to the predominantly flat UK. There are many places and centres to go to. Hot spots include Snowdonia and North Pembroke.

Dinas Mot is one of the best crags in the Llanberis Area (Snowdonia). On the South side it rarely catches the sun and is best kept for a hot, sunny, summer day. There are several buttresses with different types of climbing, and the routes are long and multi-pitch. The area features climbs of 300 to 500 feet high with over 100 routes in all grades.

The most popular and best cliff in North Pembroke is Carreg-y-Barcud. The rock here is compact sandstone which has formed into huge uniform slabs which are covered in tiny edges and thin cracks. The Main Face of Carreg-y-Barcud is the largest slab in the area and has a superb selection of routes from E1 upwards.

Other Factors

If you are organising a rock climbing day out for a group you will also need to consider other factors. Transport to and from the centre, accommodation if you are staying for more than one day and food. If your group is large enough it can be easier to hire a mini bus or coach. You should however bear in mind the size of the vehicle and check that it can access the sites you have in mind. With regards to where to stay the climbing centre may have basic on site accommodation or you could find a hotel near by.

Climbing and Birdwatching in the Lake District

Climbing and Birdwatching in the Lake District

The bird life of the English Lake District needs the support of all who love the region. All birds and their eggs and nests are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Certain rare or more endangered species are further protected by increased penalties under the 1981 act and must not be intentionally or recklessly disturbed when nesting. These birds are listed in the act and are referred to as Schedule 1 species: the Schedule 1 bird species that scramblers, walkers and climbers may most commonly encounter on crags in the Lake District is the peregrine falcon. Ravens, though not Schedule 1 birds, also need care and protection.

Peregrines are the largest falcons in the British Isles. They can be recognized by their distinctive profile, often sighted from the crag, as they plummet groundwards to seize some unsuspecting prey. Seen from below, they are pale coloured birds with dark tips to the tail and wings. Their call is a piercing shriek, once heard never forgotten! When the peregrine is disturbed this is uttered repeatedly for long periods. Peregrines hunt over a variety of habitats, catching medium-sized birds, mainly feral pigeons, by swooping at speeds of up to 200 km an hour to seize them. The preferred nesting sites of peregrines in the United Kingdom are inland crags, such as in the Lake District.

Peregrines are fairly common in the Lake District, which is one of their most important European habitats, but they are rare elsewhere. In fact the United Kingdom supports approximately 14% of the European population. Of these, in Cumbria and the Lake District, there are usually about 85 nesting sites which hold one or more birds each year and approximately 65 pairs attempt to breed each season. This is 6% of the UK’s total population and is considered to be the densest breeding population in the world. The Cumbrian birds are especially important because of the population numbers and productivity which is enabling the birds to spread and re-colonise other areas in the UK.

They are particularly vulnerable to the weather, disturbance, poor food supply and illegal activities such as shooting, poisoning, and egg and chick theft. In 2000 in the Lake District there were 83 occupied territories on which 46 pairs reared 111 young. However, in 2002 only 32 young were reared and this was the worst recorded breeding season for 30 years, predominantly due to appalling weather, but also to increased robberies. Climbers can assist by reporting any suspicious characters they see near peregrine nest sites.

Ravens are very large black birds, similar to a rook but a third bigger. They have distinctive deep “pruk-pruk” call and are great aerial acrobats, with skill in soaring and tumbling. Ravens, while not protected in the same way as peregrines and eagles, are still under potential threat from increased disturbance, and there are some voluntary restrictions in the Lake District on their account. Their nests are very large piles of twigs.

Bird Restrictions are agreed annually between the local climbers’ committee, the National Park Authority and English Nature. The area of crag agreed to be avoided can vary depending upon various factors including the layout of the crag. Some pairs also vary their choice of nesting site each year either within a crag or between different crags and so agreements may change from year to year. In general, they only apply to the most popular rock-climbing crags but this does not mean that people are necessarily allowed to climb or scramble on all other crags during this period; even where a crag is not subject to a restriction, if you suspect a bird (particularly a peregrine) is nesting on it, you should avoid it.
